Sooooo you have to be there for 5 full years to get your 3 weeks vacation for 3 years and then you get 3 weeks vacation for each additional 3 years?

I started with 10, and get a day a year up to 20 additional. Working on day #4 this year.

My current job - been here 15 years. Makes it hard to leave.
First - they pay me too much for what I do.
Second. I started w/ 18 days of vacation, and 2 floating holidays (always take those first if you get them, because you won’t get paid for them if you leave or are fired) so 4 weeks.
At 5 years (actually, the 1st fiscal year after my 4th anniversary, so 4 years, 1 month), I got another week. At 10 years (actual 9y1m) another. I’m maxed out unless I become a manager, but that will never happen :D
My wife only gets 2 weeks, so I usually end up taking full weeks and lounge around the house.
I hate my job a lot, but knowing I can take a week off every 2 months makes it somewhat livable.

I’m in the same boat. Trade of for me is, now I can save up and roll over vacation days, while before it was 3 weeks use it by the end of the year or lose them. Ah well, this job has plenty of other perks to it that my previous job did not (and is way better than the year and change I spent either unemployed, freelancing, or working on short term contract basis), so I guess it’s really whatever.

I don’t know what I’ve got but I rarely take anything anyway. Don’t think I’ve used more than a couple days in the last year and a half.
So under those conditions I better not get any kicking when I want to take some time off...

I spent 347 days unemployed before I got my current job. While it’s better than being unemployed, I’m currently actively looking for a new job.

I can’t complain too much. They reworked our policy this year, the year I hit my 10 year mark. I lose out on a day, but I’m up to almost 7 weeks. 12 weeks would be perfect, a week off each month.

That’s a bummer.
I’m sitting on 11 weeks of vacation time, and 26 total weeks of PTO. Granted, I can’t remember the last time I had a Thanksgiving or Christmas off from work.

Shortly after I started with my company, they changed the policy. Before, it was 3 weeks at 5 years and 4 weeks at 10 years. They changed it to 3 weeks at 10 years and that was the cap.
I hit 10 years with the company in 2017. In 2016, they updated the policy. Now you get 3 weeks at 5 years and 4 weeks at 12 years. So I got 3 weeks last year, but so did everyone else who had been there 5 years or more! Don’t really care that much since, it’s just bad timing on my part I guess.

Eesh, I was at something like 455 without a full time job before I got this position. The job pool in Houston for 3d animators is pretty small, and primarily revolves around the Oil & Gas industry. So, when that takes a nosedive, so do our jobs. Thankfully the current one, while still O&G is giving me a lot more general marketing experience, as well as allowing me to do a lot more photography and they have me getting into video production too. I’m hoping all this means that job prospects will be a lot more flexible in the future as a result.

Exactly. 4 weeks is the legal minimum. Most employers offer more. At my last employer I had 6, plus an additional 3 due to overtime. And that was on a 2 year contract. Those colonials are a bit odd...

Some people really like it. In this job I’ve gotten to talk to field guys who have been doing their stuff for 20+ years, and a bunch of them honestly have no desire to do anything else.

This is why I’m seriously considering going into the Air Force after college (30 days of vacation a year.) Not to mention there’s a bunch of small perks for being in the military you don’t get as a civilian (although idk about the Air Force since they’re quite different from the Army) Although I’ll definitely check out what civilian jobs are out there too.

My company switched ownership last year and I went from 10 days to 20, plus now I can carry over up to 5 days. So this year I have a minimum of 4 weeks, with the potential of up to 5 weeks. Other than my yearly trip to Canada I have no idea what to do with that time.

To such a, what’s the correct word, shithole country*? Hell no. For a western or northern European the US is only economically interesting for a very restricted crowd. CEOs, actors and a few other professions. There’s no real freedom to be gained either.
* Not the word or meaning I actually intent, but I couldn’t resist. I liked visiting the US in 2016 and have nothing against it.

But here’s the kicker, including co-op I will have been with the company for 5 years in April. And from January 1st I’ve been at my current salaried position for 3 years. A co-worker who has been with the company for 4 years and salaried position for 3 years in this upcoming September got his 3rd week last year and has been gloating about the vacation’s he’s had and going to have this year. And no, he didn’t negotiate any extra vacation. Some fuckery is going on.

In other words, tax dodgers. Otherwise, the main appeal may only be for fans of old American cars, and those are easy to import.
Indeed the US has a list of good qualities, but in general quality of life terms, there’s very little to lure someone from first world Europe.

Well to be honest there are certain careers where the US is the better choice. Like actors; the market for a Hollywood movie is just way larger than for a movie in a language only 30 million people speak, globally. So you get way more opportunities there. But those are exceptions to the rule.
The US is a fine country, but it’s not unique in that sense. I could see myself living there, but it certainly wouldn’t make my shortlist of already visited favorite countries to live in.

Indeed, acting is a very small subset of the working population. Maybe even entertainment industry in general, and a few very specific sports.
At the very least, you’d want to be very careful where you live - quality of life is as broad as the socio-economic spectrum here itself.

Did you get the 3rd week after 3 years in writing when you signed on? The company my wife works for also gives out 3 weeks after 5 years, but she got it in writing that she would get it after 3 years.

Some companies have a strict policy against discussing compensation and other things of the sort. If he’s out there with it, then perhaps a trip to HR — or to the boss — is in order.

I get unlimited* vacation.
You can take as many as you want. The only catch is that you have to make sure that nothing burns down while you’re gone. Which is basically never. On average, I take about 9 per year. Oh, and if you take more than 21, then our CEO gets a notification that there might be a problem. So basically, it’s 20 days. But we don’t say that, because you’d feed like you SHOULD take 20 days off per year. But you shouldn’t, because your body and mind belong to us.
February makes 5 years of this. I might be done soon.

Yup, been doing it professionally now for a bit over 6 years. As for software, I use a combination of 3ds max, After Effects, Premier, Photoshop, and Illustrator. For gaming, there is some of that here in Houston, but not much, 6 Foot is the only one that really comes to mind, but I know that Austin has a good bit, and I think there is some in the DFW area as well. I tend to shy away from the gaming industry though, as I prefer the industrial end of things.

I know some people who are in the industry and absolutely love it....I also know many more who got chewed up and spat back out by it. Success in that industry really requires a combination of a certain type of personality, the willingness to work some insane hours, and winding up with a group you work really well with. If any one of those things is missing, it’s an absolute killer of an industry to be in. Honestly, the entertainment segment is not much better. The marketing, and industrial end of things is probably the most forgiving, all things considered, definitely not the most glamorous though.

I’d believe it. It was game development that originally got me into software development. Writing business apps isn’t the most glorious job (I worked at two different oil and gas software places, and now I’m doing agricultural industry software), but the hours are much more reasonable and the pay is likely better.
